“I am struck by the fact that the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core…and I think the same is true of human beings. We do not wish to see children precocious and making great strides in the early years, like sprouts, producing a soft perishable timber, but better if they expand slowly at first as if contending with difficulties, and so are solidified and perfected. Such trees continue to expand with nearly equal rapidity to an extreme old age.”-Thoreau
At Mighty Oaks Preschool we feel a predictable schedule helps children to feel secure in their environment. Our daily rhythm is a guide so that we can provide the stability of a schedule while still maintaining the flexibility necessary for our play and discovery-based curriculum to thrive. While we strive to follow this rhythm, we do make allowances to best meet the needs and interests of the students.
9:00am Arrival and greeting: Each student is personally greeted and guided to a morning work of their choice.
9:10am Morning work cycle: During this time we engage in actives to further explore our student-interest led theme including: dramatic play, creative art, stories, music, sensory trays, building, science experiments, etc.
10:15am Snack time: At this time we ask for parents to provide a light, healthy snack for their child. Children may have the opportunity to help prepare additional parts of the meal.
10:45 – 11:15 Music: Every other week on an alternating schedule we offer music. Our music teacher, Zoe is a wonderful addition to the Mighty Oaks community. All students will receive music at least once a month, depending on their schedule. On these days our outdoor time will be shortened.
10:50am Outdoor exploration*: During this time children will have the opportunity to explore nature in a child friendly environment. Our outdoor classroom provides plenty of inspiration for dramatic play, gross motor development, as well as space for little scientists to learn and grow.
11:50am Lunch: A healthy lunch will be offered. At Mighty Oaks we believe in the social importance of family style dining and will serve snacks as such. Children may have the opportunity to help prepare parts of the meal. Organic offering are provided when available.
12:15pm Goodbye gathering: During our goodbye gathering we calm our bodies while reflecting and sharing about our days. We may review skills, practice our German, read a story, or engage in calming deep breathing and stretching.

* Please bring weather appropriate clothing as we try to go outside everyday. We understand that some days this is not possible due to extreme weather conditions, but Portland kids play in the rain!
