Daily Rhythm

I am struck by the fact that the more slowly trees grow at first, the sounder they are at the core…and I think the same is true of human beings. We do not wish to see children precocious and making great strides in the early years, like sprouts, producing a soft perishable timber, but better if they expand slowly at first as if contending with difficulties, and so are solidified and perfected. Such trees continue to expand with nearly equal rapidity to an extreme old age.”-Thoreau

At Mighty Oaks Preschool we feel a predictable schedule helps children to feel secure in their environment.  Our daily rhythm is a guide so that we can provide the stability of a schedule while still maintaining the flexibility necessary for our play and discovery-based curriculum to thrive.  While we strive to follow this rhythm, we do make allowances to best meet the needs and interests of the students.

We are excited to announce that beginning in fall 2013, Mighty Oaks will also offer an extended day option Monday-Thursday from 9-4pm.

Morning Session

9:00am      Arrival and greeting

9:10am       Thematic activities: During this time we engage in actives to further explore our student-interest led theme including: dramatic play, creative art, stories, music, sensory trays, building, science experiments, etc.

10:30am     Tea time (snack): A healthy, organic snack will be offered.  At Mighty Oaks we believe in the social importance of family style dining and will serve snacks as such. Children may have the opportunity to help prepare parts of the meal.  (Allergy sensitive: gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options available)

11:00am     Outdoor exploration*: During this time children will have the opportunity to explore nature in a child friendly environment.  Our outdoor classroom provides plenty of inspiration for dramatic play, gross motor development, as well as space for little scientists to learn and grow.

11:45am       Lunch: At this time we ask for parents to provide a healthy lunch for their child.  Children may have the opportunity to help prepare additional parts of the meal. (Allergy sensitive: gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options available)

12:15am      Goodbye circle: In the goodbye circle we calm our bodies while reflecting and sharing about our days.

12:30pm     Pick up

* Please bring weather appropriate clothing as we try to go outside everyday.  We understand that some days this is not possible due to extreme weather conditions, but Portland kids play in the rain!
